You Don't Have to Own the Building to Create a Memorable Brand
When people think about branding, they often think about logos, colours and websites.
But branding doesn't stop there.
A brand is experienced.
It's the feeling someone gets when they walk through your door. It's the atmosphere you've created, the details they've noticed and the impression they leave with.
The physical space your business occupies becomes part of your brand, whether you've designed it intentionally or not.
One conversation I find myself having more often is around feature murals.
I love murals. They can completely transform a space and create a memorable experience for customers.
But there's one challenge.
Many businesses don't own the walls they're painting.
They're leasing a shopfront, a café, a studio or an office.
It can feel difficult to justify investing in something permanent when the space itself isn't.
So I've been thinking about another approach.
What if, instead of painting directly onto the walls, we treated artwork as part of the brand?
A carefully curated collection of original artworks can completely change the feeling of a space while giving you something incredibly valuable — flexibility.
Unlike a mural, original artwork moves with your business.
If you relocate, your collection comes with you.
If your space evolves, the artwork can be rearranged, expanded, or displayed in new ways.
The investment continues to grow alongside your business rather than being left behind or painted over when the lease ends.
More importantly, original artwork does something decoration rarely can.
It tells a story.
Every piece becomes another expression of your brand's personality, values and character.
Whether it's inspired by your local landscape, your products, your process or your customers, artwork has the ability to create connection in a way that feels genuine rather than manufactured.
That's what excites me.
Not decorating a wall.
Curating an experience.
Because customers notice more than we often realise.
They notice the textures.
The lighting.
The colours.
The music.
The materials.
The artwork.
Individually, they might seem like small details.
Together, they become the feeling people remember.
At Shiplee Studio, I believe the details shape the experience.
That's why I don't see art as something separate from branding.
I see it as another opportunity to create connection, add personality, and build a space that people remember long after they've walked out the door.
You don't have to own the building to create a memorable brand.
Sometimes, all it takes is thoughtfully choosing what hangs on the walls.
